Kashmir shuts on India's Republic Day

Roads in summer capital city were deserted as all shops and business establishment remained closed with police and paramilitary CRPF troopers manning barricades at different intersections.

In response to the strike call given by separatists, the Valley observed a complete shutdown on Friday, the 69th Republic Day. The authorities, unlike past, had not imposed restrictions in the City, but additional number of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personal had been deployed on Kashmir raods.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday detained a woman suspected to be plotting a suicide attack ahead of Republic Day.

The observance of the day also aimed at to apprise the world community of the continued hostile attitude of India denying Kashmiris their legitimate right to self determination and deviating all global norms escaping from the peaceful solution of the much delayed Kashmir issue. The main functions were held in Srinagar and Jammu.

The area around the cricket stadium was sealed on Wednesday for full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day Parade. Yesterday, we were able to apprehend the suspect and now we will be talking to her.

Kashmir Police chief Munir Khan said that the police would reach to a conclusion only after interrogating the lady and verifying all the facts.

"Police claimed to have arrested a suspected woman suicide bomber, who had entered the Valley a few days back for a suicide bombing on January 26".

Security was beefed up in Srinagar as well as in other parts of the state and those attending Republic Day celebrations were thoroughly checked.
