[PyeongChang 2018] PyeongChang 2018 certain to be largest Winter Olympics in history

PyeongChang would be the first Summer or Winter Olympics without a USA competitor younger than 17 since the 1988 Calgary Winter Games.

The IOC banned Russian Federation from the 2018 Olympics after the report, which documented a vast Moscow-backed doping scheme in previous Games.

According to the Team USA press release, the United States is just four gold medals away from 100 wins, which would make it the second country to do so (behind Norway, with 118).

An independent review panel drew up a list of Russian athletes, invited to compete as independents, after carefully examining their doping records and testing history, possible involvement in the scandal and other factors.

After five years of successful collaboration on women and sport, UN Women and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently renewed their commitment to continue empowering women and girls through sport and increasing women's leadership and gender equality in the sport industry.

Born in Seoul as Ahn Hyun-soo, Victor An won three gold medals for his native country at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics.

In a recent teleconference, IOC President Thomas Bach said athletes left off the eligibility list had "serious indications" of doping.

"There could be a suspicion, there could even be an ongoing procedure".

"The goal is to invite clean Russian athletes for which this panel is certain and has not the slightest doubt or suspicion".

In an open letter to Bach, An demanded an explanation from the International Olympic Committee for his exclusion.

The week-long hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) includes appeals from 39 Russians who competed at Sochi in 2014 but are now banned after multiple independent reports linked them to doping. Only the so-called clean athletes have the opportunity to attend competitions in South Korea, in a decision that took into account recommendations from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which accused Russian Federation of organizing the supply of stimulants at the state level.
