What the 2018 Oscar Nominations Say About the Current State of Hollywood

Irene MckinneyJan 29, 2018

As I did a year ago, I've compiled a list of my predictions for who will take home the hardware in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Lead Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress categories.

I've only seen three of the nine best picture nominees ("Get Out", "Darkest Hour", and "Dunkirk") but even for me, this $35 package is a good deal. "We're seeing more diversity than we have in the past, but there's still a long way to go".

Leading this year's nominations is Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water", a film in which a woman who is unable to speak connects with a mutant kept in a tub.

James Franco had been viewed as a lead actor contender for his work in "The Disaster Artist".

Dee Rees became the first black woman nominated in the Adapted Screenplay category for Mudbound and only the second to be nominated in a screenwriting category at all. It's possible the allegations may have alienated the actors' branch, the ones who make the nominations.

Call Me by Your Name - with four nominations - has been a critical darling for months now, and director Luca Guadagnino [gwa-dah-NEE-no] told ABC Radio he thinks the film's empathy is what resonates with people. (Patty Jenkins will have to make do with Wonder Woman's boast of being the highest grossing live-action film ever directed by a woman.) Or that records of minority inclusion - across the board, in every category - are casually being smashed?

"Lady Bird", an ode to growing up in Central California.

Could a changing Hollywood bring changes to the 90 Academy Awards? Get Out focuses on Chris, Daniel Kaluuya, visiting his girlfriend's parents for the very first time which soon turns into a weekend of nightmares. Along with Get Out's Daniel Kaluuya, actors Denzel Washington, Octavia Spencer and Mary J. Blige also scored nods from the Academy.

"Frances McDormand says 'In this case, this chick ain't gonna lose.' And that's the line I'm going to use from Frances McDormand". Isn't the goal of these awards to honor filmdom's best work?

I, Tonya - which still hasn't made it to the Tri-Cities - is light years better, more creative and much more interesting.

Everyone wants to see the best of the best being nominated.

And while Christopher Plummer is the oldest actor to ever be nominated, Mazrimas is eyeing Sam Rockwell in "Three Billboards" for best supporting actor.

While the director and acting snubs for Call Me by Your Name may have surprised those who've championed the lush film about sexual awakening over the course of a lazy Italian summer in 1983, the fact remains that the Academy voters rewarded it with a Best Picture nod. Newcomer Daniela Vega, who is trans, stars in the Chilean movie nominated for the foreign-language film Oscar, and though her performance wasn't recognized on its own, director Sebastián Lelio said the picture wouldn't be what it is without her. However, not many performances were all that good previous year in the best actor category. That was in keeping with a tradition of generally cool treatment of action and sci-fi movies at the Academy Awards.
