Manchin Dismisses Reported Trump Effort to Fire Mueller: 'That's New York Talk'

Howard TerryJan 30, 2018

Indeed, according to the Los Angeles Times, the Trump administration has turned over 20,000 pages of records to the special counsel and his campaign turned over 1.4 million records.

"Here you have the top agent who had a hand in this Hillary investigation, and then also was brought into the Trump-Mueller probe, and he was completely biased against Trump. But the fact is, he didn't fire Mueller".

An additional 28 people affiliated with the Trump campaign have been interviewed by either the special counsel or congressional committees probing Russian election meddling.

Instead, Mueller's team is probing into all kinds of dark corners of Trumpworld, and even the president's supporters suspect there are some skeletons in that closet. Collins said it's "helpful" to know what the White House wants as Congress moves ahead, but suggested legislators would forge their own path in formulating a bill.

The interview took place three weeks before Winfrey's rousing speech on the #MeToo and Time's Up movements at the January 7 Golden Globe Awards, which set off speculation that she wanted to run for president. He also said he had discussed the possibility of Trump team derailing the investigation with other senior officials at the bureau. Those will include the president's elder son.

"I think he's got a fair prosecutor in Bob Mueller, but I don't think he's got a fair jury", Gowdy said on "Fox News Sunday" about Trump.

Another Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Jim Hines of CT, said in a TV interview that has read the Nunes memo and that its contents are far from the bombshell his GOP colleagues claim they are.

If Donald Trump comes to grief because of Robert Mueller's probe he will of course be looking for someone to blame.

Do the firing of Comey and the attempt to fire Mueller because of Trump's concern about the Russian Federation investigation, in your mind, Mr./Ms. GOP lawmaker, amount to obstruction of justice?

"I've got legislation protecting Mr. Mueller, and I'll be glad to pass it tomorrow", Graham said Sunday.

Trying to stem some of that criticism, the Justice Department's internal watchdog said Thursday that it had located several months' worth of text messages the department had previously said it couldn't find.

"He talked with his counsel, who explained to an angry and frustrated president why it was a bad idea", Collins said.

This was the second time during the Meet the Press interview that the West Virginia senator had referenced the president's NY roots, after previously describing the clashes on immigration between the president and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) as "New Yorkers talking to each other".

But it's Congress, not Sessions, that has the power to declassify and release the memo. The portrait is of a President using every resource at his disposal to shut down an investigation-of Trump himself.

While it's too early to say if Trump's regular deflection tactics are masking guilt or if he truly believes what he says, all signs point to the investigation becoming a lot more interesting as it goes along.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) pointed out during a interview on CNN's "State of the Union" that Trump can not directly fire Mueller.

The White House said Monday that President Donald Trump favors "full transparency" as Republicans on the House intelligence committee move toward an unprecedented vote on whether to release classified information to the public. Mark Warner, D-Va., vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said that if the report in The Times is true, Trump has crossed a "red line".

White House aides have previously said Trump favored releasing the document, which is in contrast to the stance of the Justice Department.
