The founder of furniture giant IKEA has died, aged 91

The statement, calling him "one of the greatest entrepreneurs of the 20th century", ends stating, "He will be much missed and warmly remembered by his family and Ikea staff all around the world".

Known for his humble style and nearly religious devotion to simplicity and efficiency, Kamprad founded IKEA at the tender age of 17 and first sold matchboxes, fish, Christmas tree decorations, and pens.

Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Swedish furniture retailer IKEA, has passed away.

A global Swedish brand and ambassador to rival the status of pop giants Abba, Mr Kamprad's cost-conscious, self-service stores revolutionised - and democratised - furniture design and interior decoration.

The death of Ingvar Kamprad at 91 has prompted both tributes and debate online.

Millions of homes all around the world are furnished with the company's products since the 1950s, which made Kamprad one of the globe's richest.

People walk outside the Europe's biggest Ikea store in Kungens Kurva, south-west of Stockholm on March 30, 2016.

Kamprad will be buried in a private ceremony for close family and friends, while Ikea executives will hold an internal memorial ceremony in Älmhult on Friday. That penny-pinching mindset formed the basis for everything customers love about Ikea today - their furniture is assembled at home and unfinished on the downward facing sides because it saves the company money.

Despite his wealth, Kamprad prided himself on being frugal, driving an old auto and encouraging staff to write on both sides of a sheet of paper to avoid waste.

In more recent years, he faced scrutiny for his past links to Nazi groups.

The name of the company is a contraction of his initials, and the first letters of the farm he grew up on, Elmtaryd, and the parish of Agunnaryd, where it is situated, respectively.

Ikea, which operates multiple companies across the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, may have shifted profits between the countries in order to reduce its tax obligations, the commission said. He also shopped at flea markets and often rode the bus.

The IKEA founder was a member of the pro-fascist New Swedish Movement, and was strongly believed to have been a member of Nazi party Svensk Socialistisk Samling.

But a 2011 book by Elisabeth Asbrink alleged details beyond what Mr Kamprad had previously admitted.

Even after World War II, Kamprad remained faithful to Engdahl.
