CEO of popular surf brand disappears at sea

Pierre Agnes, longtime CEO of Quiksilver (now Boardriders) is missing at sea near his home in SW France.

Nearly three hours later, his 36ft sailboat - the Mascaret III - was found empty and washed up on the French Atlantic coast. Crews used four boats and two helicopters to search for Agnes, continuing after nightfall, local outlet Sud Ouest reported.

It is not yet known if Mr Agnes was alone or with others, but despite rough seas, the area had low winds and good visibility at the time of his disappearance.

Pierre Agnès set sail on Tuesday morning but did not return.

Boardriders' brands include Quiksilver, Roxy, and DC Shoes.

Mr Agnes joined Boardriders Inc. - formally known as Quiksilver - almost 30 years ago and works out of the European headquarters near Biarritz.

In a statement, Boardriders said, "Early this morning our CEO, Pierre Agnes, did what he did many mornings and went fishing on his beloved boat to start his day".

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection months after Agnes took the helm, emerging in 2016.

Boardriders, which is 85-percent controlled by USA private equity firm Oaktree Capital, owns the Quicksilver, Roxy and DC Shoes brands.
