Three people are dead and two others injured after small helicopter crashed into a home near a Southern California airport, according to authorities.

The crash was reported around 1:45 p.m.at Egret Court and Shearwater Place in the Bay View Terrace community.

Five people were involved in the crash - four in the helicopter and one bystander on the ground, Newport Beach police said.

"We tried to pry them out but we didn't want to touch them", said the neighbor, who was not identified by the television station.

A helicopter crashed in Newport Beach on January 30, 2018. The crushed metal sat in a heap on the side of the home, its tail rotor sticking out of the roof of a nearby home and a 6-foot chunk landing in the street in front of yet another house.

The helicopter hit a house in Newport Beach with such force that it was barely recognizable.

"The helicopter had just recently come out of getting the avionics updated", Spitzer said.

She said she knows the people who live in the home where the helicopter crashed.

The four-seat Robinson 44 helicopter was carrying four passengers, said Ian Gregor, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration.

A neighbor told KABC that she feared for her own home.

The helicopter is based out of John Wayne Airport in Orange County.

Revolution Aviation could not be reached for comment.

The cause of the crash is now being investigated.
