Apple probed by U.S. government over iPhone slowdown

Nichole VegaFeb 02, 2018

An early 2017 iOS update, iOS 10.2.1, had throttled the performance of the iPhone 7 and older models when the battery would reach a certain level of degradation.

The Cupertino, California-based Apple has been struggling with some other software-related problems, including vulnerabilities of processor that have affected other technology companies and a faulty login that expose files on Mac accessible to intruders even without a passcode.

However, more cynical types think that Apple was hamstringing its older phones to force their owners to upgrade. The company also said it was launching features this spring that will allow users to see their iPhone battery's health, as well as a power management toggle.

The company later retracted this, stating: "We have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades".

Apple shares were down 1.3 percent to $165.87 in early afternoon trading in NY. "Apple shipped a record 22 million iPhones for the first time ever in a quarter in the U.S. which is an impressive feat because the Q4 promotional season was not almost as aggressive as previous years", Research Director Jeff Fieldhack said in a statement. Apple owned-up to reducing the performance of its handsets, but said this was done to prevent unwanted device shutdowns due to ageing batteries.

Apple denies intentionally shortening the lifespan of its products and has reduced the cost of out-of-warranty battery replacements "to regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted [its] intentions". The company is expected to provide its quarterly financial report shortly, and industry watchers claim that it is going to be a record-breaking quarter. Once again Apple started their official response on the same note last night.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has not responded a request for comment.

Apple has ripped up its plans for the flagship iPhone X smartphone and is slashing its production targets for the first three months of 2018 in half, according to a Nikkei Asian Review report. Making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that. Wistron is likely to use at least a part of this land to set up new assembly lines for Apple, the sources said.
