Mourinho waves white flag in race for EPL title

Irene MckinneyFeb 04, 2018

"After 10 seconds, we made a ridiculous mistake", Mourinho told reporters.

This was the most comfortable of wins for Manchester City, but it did not make for comfortable viewing for Pep Guardiola.

Mourinho has admitted defeat in the Premier League title race, with United an ominous 15 points behind City with just 13 games remaining. "I want to believe that by Champions League time, around the end of the month, they will be back".

That's because Johann-Berg Gudmundsson popped up with a clinical equaliser in the last 10 minutes to snatch a point for the battling Clarets. After all the Manchester City manager could only name six substitutions for his side's game against Burnley, and no one was buying it.

With John Stones and David Silva this week joining Fabian Delph, Benjamin Mendy, Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane on the sidelines, City were short on numbers.

But the United manager called on his players to use Sir Alex Ferguson's 2007 champions as inspiration ahead of next season.

Raheem Sterling and Jack Cork battle for possession.

Burnley have a poor record at home to City too, losing six of the last seven and they've won just one of their last 18 matches against the Citizens but their two defeats this season have flattered tomorrow's guests a little.

At the Bet 365 Stadium, Stoke City and Watford played out a 0-0 draw.

Next on the agenda is a period of rest, with Guardiola instructing his stars to switch off from football following a hectic spell that has seen them progress to the EFL Cup final and the fifth round of the FA Cup, while maintaining a handsome Premier League advantage.

City have done well against low-blocks so far this season and considering the last two score lines against Burnley, expect Dyche's side to stay back and play on the counter even though pressing City is perhaps the best possible way to counter their immaculate passing. De Bruyne, in the 2017/18 campaign, has taken his game to a whole new level and has emerged as the focal point of City's rampant title charge, having already scored 7 goals in the league and registered a league-high 11 assists. And if his performances this season are anything to go by, the Belgian will deliver.

After Aaron Lennon's fierce shot was tipped onto the post by Ederson, Burnley kept at it and Gudmundsson kept his cool to deny them a win.
