The Colts said in a statement Sunday that the team is "heartbroken" by Jackson's death and that the 26-year-old "was loved by all in the Colts organization". A 54-year-old passenger was also killed in the accident, according to the Indianapolis Star.

He played every one of the 16 recreations in 2016 yet spent the 2017 season on harmed save. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this hard time. The driver of a Ford F-150 drove onto the emergency shoulder and hit the rear of the vehicle, striking both Jackson and Monroe, with one of the bodies landing in the center lane of I-70, according to a release from the Indiana State Police. Monroe is believed to work for a ride-sharing service, and investigators believe he pulled over to the side of the road to assist Jackson, who had become ill.

Our hearts and prayers are with Edwin Jackson's family. With both out of the vehicle, a 2018 Lincoln, they were struck by a Ford 150 that drove onto the emergency shoulder at approximately 4 a.m.

"One of the people struck was thrown into the center lane of I-70", said Perrine.

The driver of the pickup truck, distinguished as 37-year-old Alex Cabrera Gonsales of Indianapolis, endeavored to escape by walking yet was gotten by cops as he attempted to flee on an off-ramp. Gonsales reportedly ran from the scene after the crash but was arrested a short time later. Indiana State Police say it is believed Gonsales was intoxicated and driving without a license.

He was taken to the Marion County Jail, where blood-alcohol test results were pending.

"As he slowed to stop for the crash he struck the body of the victim in the center lane", Perrine said in a statement. "We will miss him greatly", the statement reads.

Known for his outgoing personality and inspirational approach, Jackson was respected in the locker room for a work ethic that led him from an undrafted free agent who was cut by Arizona to a defensive starter in Indianapolis. He was on the Georgia Southern team that defeated Florida in 2013.

Jackson was a high school football star and state-championship-finalist wrestler in Atlanta.
