Raheem Sterling wants refs to get tough on risky tackles

And England global Sterling has warned that top players will miss the World Cup in the summer because of suffering injuries from bad challenges.

Last weekend Leroy Sane was caught by a late studs-up slide from Cardiff's Joe Bennett and now faces up to seven weeks out with ankle ligament damage.

West Brom winger Matt Phillips was booked for a wild tackle on midfielder Brahim Diaz in City's 3-0 league win in midweek and it followed a caution for winger James McClean after his lunge on City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

Guardiola has made his point often enough that he did not feel the need to revisit the issue as he held a press conference on Friday, but that did not stop one of his key players speaking out. I think we played really well and we should have scored more, but it happens and it's not even bad defending, it's just the way it goes sometimes.

He said, "I find it a bit unfair at times".

"We knew we'd have to take our chances, I think we did extremely well in this game".

"We need to cut down on that because we've got a World Cup at the end of the year and the majority of the players in the top flight, and certainly in our team, will be playing in it and it would be sad to see someone miss the tournament due to a silly tackle and someone get away with it".

Sterling, who is having the best scoring season of his career to date, was picked out at the far post by Danilo's cross, but scuffed the contact and sent the ball wide of the far post.

"I was feeling it from the first minute", he said. He's the calmest keeper I've seen.

Asked about how he and team-mates can be fouled in this manner, Sterling said it was a problem for other players too.

Dyche saw his Burnley side claim a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Premier League leaders City at Turf Moor on Saturday and, although the hosts were on the back foot for long periods, they might have been celebrating victory but for stunning reaction saves by Ederson to deny Ben Mee and Aaron Lennon before Johann Gudmundsson's leveller. "But I just feel we need to try and cut this out of the game".

That is the Premier League leaders' longest gap between games since the November global break and Guardiola has made a decision to give all his squad three days off.
