The national weather service "Yellow Status" warning will remain in place until 4am tomorrow, Tuesday, February 6.

A statement on the Met Office website states: "A spell of sleet and snow will continue to move southeast across the United Kingdom on Tuesday, gradually weakening across England and Wales".

Met Eireann's general forecast states: "Today will be cold and frosty this morning with icy patches".

Lower down outbreaks of sleet or wet snow are possible with any accumulations gradually thawing.

"Significantly, once it clears we will see freezing behind it".

It says: "A spell of rain, quickly turning to sleet and snow, will move southeast across the United Kingdom on Monday night and Tuesday, gradually weakening across England and Wales".

"During cold weather conditions aircraft have to be de-iced prior to departure to ensure that they are safe and additional measures are taken to ensure the safety of our operation is maintained at all times".

"A little bit of snow too for parts of Northern Ireland, now we have got this wet weather sitting over parts of northern England, so still some falling snow here". Air temperatures will fall back to -3° or -4°, with it expected to be coldest away from the Atlantic, and even colder over lying snow.

According to the Met Office, travel plans may be affected due to icy conditions during the yellow-level weather alert.

It will be cold with variable cloud and some sunshine to begin with on Monday, with frosts only slowly clearing during the morning and just the risk of the odd light shower near the east coast.

The lowest temperature recorded overnight was -6C (21F), in County Down, while it dropped to -5.6C in Sutherland, and Northumberland.

Update 12.18pm: A homeless charity has expressed concern for people sleeping rough in severe weather conditions tonight.
