Prosecutor rips Trump's 'ghoulish' comments after Colt player's death

Irene MckinneyFeb 08, 2018

"We are disheartened that ghoulish and inappropriate public commentary has politicized this tragedy".

Trump added in a second tweet: "My prayers and best wishes are with the family of Edwin Jackson, a wonderful young man whose life was so senselessly taken".

Trump and Congress this week are debating immigration policy with a February 8 budget deadline.

Joe Donnelly, Indiana's Democratic Senator said in a statement, "This man should not have been allowed back into this country after he was deported in 2007". The man, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, was found not guilty of murder in the case.

Police said Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, was driving while intoxicated at the time of the crash.

ICE agents arrested Orrego-Savala in San Francisco on October 27, 2006, officials said, leading to his first USA deportation.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, who is from Guatemala and has twice been deported from the USA, is charged with causing death while driving intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. The judge set his bond at $200,000 United States after entering a not guilty plea on his behalf.

His defence attorney, Jorge Torres, said Orrego-Savala's immigration status has no bearing on the drunken-driving case and questioned whether his client could get a fair trial given his immigration issues.

Federal prosecutors spell his name as Orrego-Zavala, but the federal criminal compliant lists "Orrego-Savala" as among his aliases, according to the Associated Press.

The incident drew attention from President Donald Trump and others, who said the case illustrated the need to crack down on illegal immigration, but Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry slammed that move. The Georgia Southern product had 61 tackles and two sacks and started eight games in 2016 for the Colts.

"Edwin was loved by all in the Colts organization", the team said. "We admired his outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality". Officials said Monroe and Jackson were outside of the vehicle and killed in the crash.

Orrego-Savala remains jailed in Indianapolis.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning tweeted about the death of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and the man suspected of driving drunk in the auto accident that killed Jackson and his Uber driver on Sunday. One of the men was thrown into the center lane.

Both Jackson and Monroe were killed.

Indiana State Police said Tuesday the driver of the vehicle that struck Jackson and another victim was an undocumented immigrant, CNN reported.

A breath test administered at the crash scene found that Orrego-Savala's blood-alcohol content was 0.239 percent, or almost three times Indiana's legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to a probable cause affidavit. He also admitted to being the driver, according to the affidavit.

Orrega-Savala's initial hearing is now scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Prosecutors have until Wednesday to make a final decision on charges.

He was once again arrested by ICE in San Francisco in October 2006 for being in the country illegally. Monroe was believed to have stepped out of the auto to help Jackson, police said.
