Reddit bans "involuntary porn" communities that trade AI-generated celebrity videos

Deepfakes were popularized on a Reddit subform where they gained notoriety over the last several months.

Deepfakes are videos with celebrity faces mapped into real porn using AI software, and there are dozens of videos "starring" celebs from Natalie Portman to Scarlett Johansson. Meaning that it's not just Katy Perry who should be anxious about her head being wrongly edited into porn, but also politicians, world leaders, and anybody else who doesn't want to have a computer-generated video putting words into their mouth.

The firm said that, in general, when users flag content that directly violates Pornhub's terms of service, it's 'removed as soon as we are made aware of it'.

"Reddit prohibits the dissemination of images or video depicting any person in a state of nudity or engaged in any act of sexual conduct apparently created or posted without their permission, including depictions that have been faked", the relevant rules state.

That aspect of it has now led to the removal of the Deepfakes subreddit, which was banned earlier this afternoon for violating Reddit's "policy against involuntary pornography". "We will suspend any account we identify as the original poster of intimate media that has been produced or distributed without the subject's consent".

Social-media platforms are pushing back against the growing - and alarming - trend of computer-generated porn online.

Despite Pornhub's statement, deepfakes are still widely available on its site, either by searching a celebrity's name or simply inputting "deepfakes".

As, not all deepfakes revolve around shopping non-consensual porn. "We will also suspend any account dedicated to posting this type of content", the spokesperson added.

The algorithms used to power deepfakes videos are also being used to create doctored versions of popular movie scenes, as well as videos showing politicians and other high-profile officials in fake situations.
