Manchester United star Alexis Sanchez has been handed a 16-month suspended prison sentence after being sentenced for tax fraud.

New Manchester United signing Alexis Sanchez is the flawless player for the club, former-captain Wayne Rooney has claimed.

The Manchester United forward has however reached an agreement with the prosecutor to pay the money he owes with interest, Goal writes.

Sanchez, who joined United from Arsenal last month, faced being tried over the fraud of €983,000 (RM4.77 million) linked to image rights during his time at Spanish giants Barcelona, according to details of the deal seen by AFP.

Sanchez defrauded the Spanish government of around €1million in tax between 2012 and 2013 by falsifying the sale of his image rights to a foreign company.

Sanchez's former Barca teammate Lionel Messi was given a 21-month prison sentence in 2016, but exchanged it for a £223,000 fine a year ago.

Sanchez joined Barcelona in July 2011 and played almost 150 games for the club before leaving for the Premier League three years later.

Lionel Messi's 21-month prison sentence for tax fraud was reduced to a fine past year.

In June, 2017, Alexis Sanchez's former teammate at Barcelona, Lionel Messi's 21-month prison sentence was overturned when he agreed to pay the fines throughout the entire duration of his sentence.

Samuel Eto'o and Brazilian defender Adriano also have open cases against them over alleged tax evasion in Spain.
