Apple investigating after man says AirPods exploded

Technology gets stranger and at times, more risky by the day.

Apple is investigating in incident in which an AirPod allegedly "blew up" in Tampa, Florida. Colon told WFLA he was jamming out to a dance mix when white smoke started to billow out from the right pod's chassis. He then left the AirPods on top of workout equipment and went to get help.

"It was already popped", he said. "You can see flame damage", he told WFLA.

Thankful that he removed the earbuds in time, Colon is now anxious about what could happen to other AirPod owners.

The explosive problems arise when a battery undergoes thermal runaway, or when its structure gets damaged, causing an increase in temperature and release of energy.

Though rattled from the whole experience, Colton insisted he's glad to have trusted his intuition and acted so quickly to remove the AirPods from his ears, admitting that "I don't know what would've happened to my ear, but I'm sure since it hangs down, it could've been [my] ear lobe. Ear lobe could've been burnt".

In 2016, South Korean manufacturer Samsung's flagship Galaxy Note 7 was hit by a spate of exploding batteries.

"This looks like this was the battery", Colon said when explaining the malfunction to KXAN sister station WFLA. Apple has reportedly reached out to Colon to figure out what happened and will likely issue a public statement in the not-too-distant future.

This is not the first time that a popular electronic product has hit the headlines for exploding.
