The winter storm blanketing Chicago has dumped almost 5 inches of snow in Chicago as of early Friday morning, but the latest forecasts are significantly better than yesterday. After a possible break in snowfall Saturday afternoon/evening, yet a third accumulating snow could occur later Saturday night into Sunday.

Chicago was anticipating 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) of snow early on Friday, with more expected over the weekend, according to the service's forecast.

The National Weather Service said heavy snow is forecast to move into upstate NY and New England by early Saturday, Reuters reported. City officials say they're expecting another round of snow later Friday, one overnight and then a final round Saturday night into Sunday.

Chicago's two biggest airports, O'Hare and Midway, had hundreds of flight cancellations on Friday - some of which were canceled on Thursday before the storm arrived - because of Mateo, FlightAware reported. Schools across MI also cancelled classes. "Road conditions are abysmal", she said, adding she'll take the train to make her way around the city Friday.

The storm that started Thursday evening in Iowa and Nebraska also created treacherous driving conditions and forced the cancellation of more than 1,300 flights in Chicago and Detroit.

Weather service meteorologist Charles Mott said the morning rush in Chicago "is gonna be trouble".

The National Weather Service says the Kalamazoo area has seen at least 6 inches of fresh snowfall since late Thursday as the region remained under a winter storm warning. "We still have several hours left of this heavier snow".

"We will be doing everything we can to prepare for and combat this major winter storm", said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski in the statement. Ten inches were reported in parts of northern IL and 8 inches in northern Indiana.

"It's part of living in MI", a smiling Stawasz said from underneath his Detroit Red Wings winter hat. Snow across southern and central MI ranged from 7 inches on the western side of the state to about 5 inches in the Detroit area.

Schools in Chicago and MI announced cancellations ahead of Winter Storm Mateo.

A section of Interstate 94 in southwestern MI was blocked after dozens of vehicles crashed.

By early Friday, more than 100 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan.
