Colts make Reich head coach

Grant SmithFeb 12, 2018

The Indianapolis Colts have hired Frank Reich as their new head coach, finally filling the vacancy after Josh McDaniels backed out.

The person spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had yet been made. This time around, Ballard will actually get to introduce his new head coach in a press conference that's scheduled for Tuesday.

On Feb. 6, the Colts announced that McDaniels would be the team's new coach, but that announcement blew up in their face just a few hours later when McDaniels changed his mind and chose to stay in New England. Reich began his coaching career in Indianapolis, where he served as a coaching intern from 2006-08. The Philadelphia Eagles will face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII on February 4th.

Reich is known for when he started in place of the injured Jim Kelly and helped the Bills overcome a 35-3 third-quarter deficit to beat the Houston Oilers, 41-38, in overtime in a playoff game in January 1993. Reich worked as the Colts' wide receivers coach in 2011 after Manning missed the season because of injury. In the final game of the 1992 regular season, with Reich serving as the backup for Jim Kelly at the time, Reich was required to finish a game against the Houston Oilers when Kelly endured strained ligaments in his knee; during a rematch game, Reich led the Bills to the largest comeback in National Football League history. Indy lost in the Super Bowl to New Orleans. He then took the same job with the Eagles in 2015, where he stayed until now.

"Frank has all the ingredients of a successful head coach: intelligence, innovation, character, organizational and leadership skills, and a commanding presence", Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a statement.

Now, after having his name bandied about the past couple of years as a head coaching candidate, he'll have a chance to run the show. In early 2016, he was hired as an offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles.

If Luck is healthy, the Colts' job might be one of the most attractive openings this offseason.

When the six-week coaching search (finally) concluded, Colts general manager Chris Ballard decided against going with a flashy choice.
