Drinking alcohol better than exercise for living past 90, study claims

Other findings on longevity showed that people who spent about two hours daily on a hobby lowered their risk of premature death by 21 percent.

That's right. A couple of glasses of beer or wine a night could be the secret to living a longer life! The bottom line is: If you drink, drink moderately and because you enjoy it - not because you want to live forever.

Every six months, researchers visit the participants and perform neurological and neuropsychological tests on them. The ideal alcohol intake is roughly two glasses of beer or wine a day, which the study found reduces a person's chance of dying prematurely by 18 percent.

Even more surprisingly, the study found that being a little overweight - but not obese - could also help you live to a ripe old age, cutting the risk of premature death by 3%.

For the last 15 years, Kawas and her team have been examining the health and habits of 1,700 people over the age of 90, to determine what makes it more likely that people will live to that age. "Maybe that can tell us something", Kawas added.

Unfortunately, although perhaps not unexpectedly, about 40 percent of people over 90 suffer from dementia according to the study, and 80 percent have some kind of disability.

Additionally, drinking alcohol has been associated with an increased risk of contracting seven types of cancers, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, with greater alcohol intake generally being associated with greater cancer risk. Everything in moderation and staying healthy overall in life play a large part in longevity.

Dr. Kawas admits she does not know why modest drinking and putting on a few pounds seem to help people live longer, but that she firmly believes it improves longevity.
