Allies urge Trump to not go further on gun control measures

Hundreds have been killed amid increased bombardments in recent days of the rebel-controlled eastern suburbs of Damascus.

"How many more deaths as a country can we take?"

Trump is speaking at a joint news conference with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

"I turned 18 the day after" the shooting, said tearful student Samuel Zeif.

He says what's needed now is a political settlement reached by the people who live there.

At the White House, Trump told local and state school officials he had discussed his ideas to stem gun violence in schools with the NRA, the politically influential gun lobby that backed him in the 2016 campaign. He maintained an armed educator would have done to Cruz what cops and schools security did not.

"This man standing outside of the school the other day doesn't love the children, probably doesn't know the children", he said. "It is called concealed carry, where a teacher would have a concealed gun on them", said the president.

The Feb. 14 rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida was the latest in a series of deadly shootings at US schools and has spurred unprecedented youth-led protests in cities across the country.

Earlier this week, Trump suggested that some 20% of teachers should be armed. "We need that. And then, after we do that, when we see this trouble, we have to nab them", he said. "He didn't turn out to be too good", the president said.

He explained he's talking about "a small percentage" of the teachers being armed. They may be Marines that left the Marines, left the Army, left the Air Force. As Trump climbed the stairs, a wind gust blew aside a flap of hair.

In Florida, Republican Sen.

But he's refusing to mention the cancer-stricken senator by name. "I said, 'Mr. President, every morning, I want you to look at those pictures of my daughter to give you energy to fight for this, to make it happen, so no other family's got to go in that office'". "Because my daughter, I'm not going to see again", said Pollack.

Pollack said he went to the White House on a mission. "I hear you" was written in black marker.

Surviving parents from two other school massacres, at Columbine in Colorado in 1999 and at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"They're so violent", Trump said. "People like to blame them, and they do have power and all of that, but they want to do things".

The famous evangelist died Wednesday at his North Carolina home. "We'll solve it together", Trump said.

"Banning specific weapons is not going to fix this", said Scott.

NRA leaders emerged in unannounced appearances at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, blaming the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local reporting failures for the Florida shooting. They expected Trump to aggressively push their agenda. "What is your recommendation to stop it?" he asked them.

"There's a tremendous feeling that we want to get something done", he said.

Trump has called for raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21, a proposal the National Rifle Association has rejected.

President Donald Trump is urging his conservative supporters to keep up the enthusiasm heading into November's congressional election. "You control the Senate and you control the executive".

President Donald Trump is telling conservative activists that he's proven he's one of them.

"So many people are looking for, maybe, shortcut solutions, when in reality, if we're going to really reform this issue and fully address it, we need to tackle the big problems, and that includes the mental health problems that cause people to be this way in the first place", the Texas governor said. He also said Gov. Rick Scott paid him a visit Thursday and told him he is dedicated to making schools safe for each child. "For the first time we're holding Pakistan accountable for its actions", White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah told reporters during a press conference.

Trump added, "He certainly did a poor job, there's no question about that".

The president had invited the teen survivors of school violence and parents of murdered children in a show of his resolve against gun violence in the wake of last week's shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and in past years at schools in CT and Colorado.
