Don't expect to see a Nintendo Switch hardware update any time soon

Ismael LynchMar 04, 2018

Evidently at "Switch 2.0" is not in the cards (though it of course could be eventually). Such a notion is particularly easy to believe when you consider all of the hardware variants Nintendo has launched for the 3DS over the years.

Wall Street Journal reporter and Nintendo connoisseur Takashi Mochizuki is at it again, giving us an inside look at Nintendo's plans for the Switch moving forward.

The development of the Nintendo Labo definitely seems to be part of the company's long-term strategy.

While Nintendo hasn't commented on the report, the firm's CEO Tatsumi Kimishima recently said that he wanted to make the Switch's product cycle longer than the five-to-six-year span that's become customary in the games console industry. According to the WSJ sources, Nintendo wants to keep manufacturing and shipping its current Switch model rather than a new one. The report also makes short mention of the Switch now expecting to hit 17 million sales worldwide by March this year - that's now, by the way. Add your Nintendo Switch console to power it up and...hold a recital, catch a fish, or win a race. Were you holding out for a revised console?

According to these sources, Nintendo is more focused on additional features related to the network and peripherals to be connected to USB Type-C ports on Switch.

Of course, that Nintendo isn't planning a hardware redesign right now doesn't mean one will never materialize.

Nintendo on the other hand, enjoys refreshing its handheld hardware, but not so much its home consoles.
