NRA boycott: FedEx to keep its discount; 10 companies drop gun group

Eileen GuzmanMar 04, 2018

The National Rifle Association, the country's most powerful gun group, has dismissed calls for tighter gun control following last month's shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead.

"The NRA is there to protect certain rights and I think they're reasonable", Derossitt said. It was most prominent in the states with the highest rate of gun ownership, and among people living in the South and the West.

The NRA called the decisions to cut ties "a shameful display of political and civic cowardice" in a statement Saturday, and said that it would not scare any of the NRA's more than five million members in "the greatest nation in the world".

But the number of companies that have distanced themselves from the NRA or enacted new policies on guns continues to grow by the day.

In Ohio, the GOP gubernatorial primary has turned into an arms race for who can take hardest line in support of gun owners.

FedEx's refusal to end its NRA discount led to the creation of the #BoycottFedEx hashtag on Twitter. A new poll indicates 70 percent of Americans favor stricter gun controls, and companies are hearing the message.

His Republican primary opponent, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, upped the ante with a counterproposal: Instead of exempting Delta from taxes for jet fuel, the state should enact a sales tax holiday for guns and ammunition over the Fourth of July holiday.

"FedEx opposes assault rifles being in the hands of civilians". That hasn't been the case after Parkland, Gaines-Ross said, adding that the organized "March for Our Lives" on March 24 is still weeks away. "These kids talk about enough is enough".

In the same statement, FedEx tried to distance itself from the NRA on gun policy, saying that the company believes that assault rifles should only be available for military use.

First National Bank of Omaha: The bank said it will stop issuing an NRA-branded Visa card. A tweeted announcement said "customer feedback has caused us to review our relationship with the NRA".

On Saturday, Delta and United Airlines cut ties with the NRA, joining First National Bank of Omaha, Enterprise Holdings, security software company Symantec, home security company SimpliSafe, auto insurer MetLife, vehicle rental firms Avis and Budget, moving companies Allied and North American Van lines, software company Wild Apricot, and vehicle buying service TrueCar.

Gun-makers have offered free memberships to people who buy their weapons.

SimpliSafe: A company spokesperson told ThinkProgress that the home security company had "discontinued our existing relationship with the NRA". Some corporations have begun to respond by refusing to run NRA advertising.

Other activists continue to campaign for bans on semiautomatic weapons, like the ones used in the Florida school shooting and the October massacre outside a Las Vegas hotel, to pressuring public pension funds to sell their holdings in companies that manufacture or distribute guns. United and Delta airlines quickly joined in, pointedly asking to be deleted from the NRA's website.

TrueCar: The auto buying service said its partnership with the NRA would end February 28.
