Amazon Will No Longer Sell Nest Smart Home Products

Eileen GuzmanMar 07, 2018

According to Business Insider, Amazon informed Nest that it will no longer be stocking its latest smart home device such as the Nest thermostat and Nest security devices. Once Amazon's current inventory of Nest products, that'll be it - unless the two companies can come to an understanding. Amazon previous year refused to provide some of Nest's latest products like the Nest Cam IQ and latest-generation smart thermostat. The online retailer reportedly told Nest employees that the decision "came from the top", but didn't directly confirm that it was from CEO Jeff Bezos.

In the wake of the decision, Nest said it would stop selling all its products via Amazon.

Technically, you still might find Nest products through third-party sellers in the Marketplace program. Previous summer, Amazon started a Prime Video app for Android, but has yet to add support for streaming its content with a Chromecast. This means that the Nest devices present on Amazon could vanish overnight. Then, the e-commerce giant removed YouTube from Amazon's Fire TV products and the Echo Show due to "lack of reciprocity".

Amazon also steadfastly refuses to sell devices like the Google Home speaker and the flagship Pixel smartphones, and this latest decision to stop selling Nest seems like another step up in the ongoing battle. It's also moving big into smart home products, like its $US1 ($1) billion acquisition of doorbell company Ring.

The conversation occurred over the phone late past year.

This comes after Nest announcing earlier this year that it will be moved back into Google's mainstream hardware operation. It will be interesting to see how the war between Amazon and Google pans out, as the companies come in increasingly direct competition with each other in segments ranging from home automation to digital ads. The company debuted Amazon Key last fall, which is powered by a home security camera and smart lock that recognize delivery personnel and lets them enter a home to deliver a package.
