Keown pinpoints Arsenal player that has let Wenger down

Grant SmithMar 07, 2018

Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin was furious with Arsene Wenger for dropping him in Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Brighton and believes the Frenchman is punishing him for the club's poor form.

Laurent Koscielny has laid bare the crisis of confidence at Arsenal and admitted the players' self-belief will not return swiftly after Brighton inflicted the team's fourth defeat in the space of 11 days.

Arsenal sits in sixth place in the Premier League standings, 13 points behind fourth-place Tottenham and an astounding 30 points behind first-place Manchester City.

"At the moment, my future is not my main worry", said Wenger after the Brighton defeat. When you go through a hard patch, uncertainty before the game is the quality of the performance we can give.

After back-to-back 3-0 losses to Manchester City across two competitions, Arsenal stumbled again following two errors by goalkeeper Petr Cech on the south coast.

On top of this, they would have to pip both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, who now sit in fourth and fifth place, which seems highly unrealistic given the current state of the team.

- Pascal Gross has assisted Glenn Murray four times in the Premier League this season - only Cesar Azpilicueta (six for Alvaro Morata) and Kevin De Bruyne (five for Sergio Aguero) have assisted a player more. "I believe I can do it".

The goal triggered the first chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" directed at Wenger from the home supporters but alarmingly for the manager, prompted little response from his side.

The Belgium assistant coach said on Sky Sports' Super Sunday: "Listen, I'm a competitor, you don't back down from a challenge".

The Europa League now stands as the difference-maker in terms of Arsenal's season, and appears to be Wenger's only real option when it comes to salvaging his campaign, reputation and even potentially his job. "We tried to fight and play football but you could see the confidence is very down".

The ball landed on the boot of Less Dunk, who volleyed it in for the first score of the Premier League scuffle.

"That gave them a lift going into the half-time talk, and they showed in phases throughout that second half the quality that they've got".
