Aadhaar deadline could be extended beyond 31 March, Centre tells SC

The issue related to extension of deadline came up during the hearing of another petition in which the court directed the CBSE not to mandatorily seek Aadhaar number from students for enrolling themselves for appearing in NEET-18 examination.

Consequently, the Bench recorded the Centre's submission that students henceforth "need not necessarily" submit Aadhaar as their identity proof to register for NEET 2018, and other documents such as ration card or voter card or passport or driving licence or bank account would suffice.

The appeal in Supreme Court challenges the order of the Gujarat High Court, a report by Times Now said.

Earlier, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had told the apex court that it had not authorised CBSE for mandatorily taking Aadhar number of students for appearing in NEET examinations.

"Like in Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya and Assam, other ID proofs can be given for exam", said Attorney General KK Venugopal.

The Constitution Bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra has been hearing a bunch of petitions against the Aadhaar law and recently was informed by Attorney General K K Venugopal that Centre had extended the deadline in the past too and they can do it now as well.

One, Abid Ali Patel, from Gujarat has moved the apex court seeking to stay on the orders of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education). The deadline for mandatory linkage has now been extended to 31 March, 2018. The NEET 2018 application forms close on 9 March 2018.

Justice Chandrachud said even if the court reserved its verdict on 20 March, banks and other institutions would have only 10 days left to implement Aadhaar verification, which might be hard. If you extend the deadline at the last moment then it will create a lot of confusion as it is the end of the financial year and banks have to ensure compliance, the court also said.

On December 15, 2018, the apex court had extended till March 31 2018, the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various services and welfare schemes.
