Democratic Nashville mayor resigns after affair, pleads guilty to theft

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry resigned on Tuesday after pleading guilty in state court to theft in connection with an extramarital affair she admitted to having with the head of her security detail.

Barry pleaded guilty earlier Tuesday morning to felony theft of property over $10,000, according to court documents obtained by CNN.

Barry graduated from Notre Dame de Sion and her mother lives in Overland Park.

When the story of Barry's two-year affair with Sergeant Robert Forrest Jr., first broke, she admitted it pretty quickly. If Barry follows her plea agreement for next three years, the charges can be dismissed and expunged. Barry has not said when the affair ended, only that it's over. She will be immediately replaced by the city's vice mayor.

Vice-Mayor David Briley, a Barry ally and the scion of a prominent Nashville political family, became mayor upon her resignation, and will presumably be running in an August special election to fill her four-year term, which ends next year.

The revelation of the affair led to an internal investigation, which found probable cause that a nude photo and partially nude photo of a woman found on Forrest's work cellphone were taken while he was working and the two were engaging in their relationship while he was on duty. The election to officially replace Barry will occur during the August 2 general election.

"I have lots of work to do in this city and every day I get up and I do it", she said. And I'm going to have several more bad days. He will serve 3 years on probation and must pay restitution of $45,000 to Metro Nashville government. His vice unit was shutting down massage parlors, doing a thankless job that ultimately made Nashville safer and more livable. This presumably was treated as evidence that the mayor herself had contrived to make the trip and arranged for Forrest's presence without a legitimate reason for it. She was the point person for a $5.4 billion transit plan that Nashville voters will consider in a citywide referendum in May. Elected in 2015, Barry maintained a high profile in the city, appearing routinely at concerts and other events and spearheading a successful effort to bring professional soccer to Nashville. In addition to this, Forrest gained $173,843.13 in overtime pay from July 2015 to January 2017. In her resignation letter, she called her experience as mayor the "honor of a lifetime". "At no time did I ever violate my oath as a police officer or engage in actions that would abuse the public trust".
