Sam Nunberg Says He Will Refuse Subpoena in Russia Probe

Irene MckinneyMar 09, 2018

You've probably already heard about former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg's odd odyssey through the talk show circuit Monday, in which he said he was going to ignore Robert Mueller's subpoena.

Before wrapping up his unhinged statements at one of his interviews, CNN host Erin Burnett asked Nunberg whether he had been drinking because she could smell alcohol on his breath.

Then, in an interview with the Associated Press, Nunberg, who was sacked twice from the campaign, acknowledged he was angry over Mueller's subpoena and having to hand in thousands of emails and communications with former campaign officials, but in the end he'd end up complying.

The special counsel's investigation is now one of several probes looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether Trump campaign associates have any ties with Russians.

Mr Nunberg, who worked on the campaign during 2015, said collecting emails and other communications he had with other key Trump advisors - particularly Steve Bannon and Roger Stone - was too much trouble and he would not do it.

For one afternoon, former Trump aide Sam Nunberg single-handedly owned the media cycle. "I don't know what it is, and perhaps I'm wrong, but he did something", he told Jake Tapper.

"I thought it was a teachable moment", he said of his 24 hours in the limelight.

Nunberg was eager to claim that his defiance of Special Counsel Robert Mueller would earn him a place in history.

Nunberg's rants on various news programs on Monday led some to wonder if he was drunk, but Scarborough took a somber tone as he suggested that the behavior is a result of the mounting pressure put on those involved in the Trump campaign by the Mueller probe.

Others pointed out that Nunberg was a big boy who could take the heat - and as a former aid to then-candidate Trump was fair game. "I'm going to answer every single question". Whatever they want to say about me, that's fine. I believe Carter Page was colluding with the Russians.

Talking to the AP Monday night, Nunberg said he would be more willing to comply with Mueller's document request if investigators ask for fewer emails.

"I was very close to Donald Trump", he said. Nunberg has since backpedaled, telling the Daily Caller he will comply with the subpoena. Initially declaring that he would defy Mueller's subpoena, the defiant Nunberg said, "Let him arrest me", during an interview with The Washington Post.

"'If you can get this idiot elected twice, ' Nunberg marveled, you would achieve something like immortality in politics", Wolff reported.

"We are fully cooperating with the office of the special counsel".
