Send your name to the sun

Ismael LynchMar 09, 2018

In the event that you need your name to movement through the Sun's environment, overcoming fierce warmth and radiation conditions, here comes your possibility.

Through the course of its almost seven-year mission, Parker Solar Probe will make a series of orbits around Venus, Earth's sister planet. "This mission will answer questions scientists have sought to uncover for more than six decades", Mr. Zurbuchen said.

You can be a part of NASA's maiden mission to touch the sun. Calling it the "hottest ticket this summer", NASA is accepting submissions for the historic journey until April 27.

You can send your name to the sun, via a microchip installed on NASA's Parker Solar Probe mission.

Submissions will be accepted until April 27, 2018.

The probe, which is about the size of a small auto, will make multiple loops around the Sun during its mission, inching ever closer while gathering data about the star's magnetic field and atmosphere.

The study of how the sun affects space and the environment of planets, known in scientific terms as heliophysics, has always been a priority for scientists. The field is not only vital to understanding Earth's most important and life-sustaining star, it supports exploration in the solar system and beyond. That's seven times closer than any other probe has ever gotten to the sun, NASA officials said.

At its closest approach to the sun, the Parker spacecraft will be going at approximately 4,30,000 miles per hour. NASA points out that, that's fast enough to travel between Washington D.C. and Tokyo in less than a minute.

The Parker Solar Probe, which is named after solar astrophysicist Eugene Parker, will carry the mission of venturing into the atmosphere of the sun to try to unlock the secrets of the host star of the solar system. "This incredible spacecraft is going to reveal so much about our star and how it works that we've not been able to understand", said project scientist Nicola Fox of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. Given the importance of his research and his involvement with this mission, NASA has named its mission for the first time on a living individual.

Back in the '50s, Parker proposed a number of groundbreaking theories about how stars - including our sun - give off energy. Parker also theorized an explanation for the superheated solar atmosphere, the corona, which is - contrary to what was expected by physics laws - hotter than the surface of the Sun itself. Recently, its name has been changed to Parker Solar Probe from its previous name Solar Probe Plus to honor the Emeritus Professor Eugene Parker who serves as an astrophysicist at the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of Chicago. As the probe swings closer and closer to its final destination, the spacecraft will be protected from temperatures up to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit by a revolutionary heat shield made from carbon-carbon composite material.
