Pharma Bro Martin Shkreli sentenced to 7 years in prison

Nichole VegaMar 10, 2018

His own lawyer confessed to wanting to punch him in the face sometimes.

On Friday, Shkreli's unique journey from a hedge fund rising star to Wall St bad boy took its most serious turn yet. He corresponded with journalists, ridiculing the personal appearance of one female reporter who asked him for an interview.

"I wanted to be a success in the business world, while being young and immature.I will do it [ONE DAY], the right way". "I was asking for investments based on lies", he reiterated, making it clear that case has nothing to do with price of treatments, "that is something that Congress must deal with". "I now understand how I need to change", Shkreli said in his letter.

According to reports from inside the court, Shkreli's troll persona was nowhere to be found on Friday as, prior to his sentencing, he read a tearful statement accepting blame for his actions and declaring "the only person to blame for me being here today is me, I took down Martin Shkreli".

Former pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli smiles while speaking to the media in front of U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of NY with members of his legal team after the jury issued a verdict on August 4, 2017. He was also fined $75,000.

Shkreli was convicted in August of lying to investors in his hedge funds and manipulating shares in the biotech company he founded.

The defense offered the judge several letters from Shkreli and his supporters, including former colleagues who described him as a self-made contributor to pharmaceutical advances.

But she did say his conduct after the verdict made her doubt the sincerity of his remorse.

After handing Shkreli his sentence, the judge urged him to continue teaching inmates math and finance, as he had been doing recently, and she told him, "I do wish you well". And she quoted one piece of correspondence in which he wrote: "F-- the feds". But more importantly than all that, it includes the lone copy of The Wu-Tang Clan's famously (and literally) one-of-a-kind album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.

Is "Pharma Bro" Martin Shkreli (SHKREL'-ee) a manipulator who conned wealthy investors or a misunderstood eccentric who made those same investors even wealthier?

Assistant US attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis said Mr Brafman was trying to portray Shkreli as a "child". "He is a man who needs to take responsibility for his actions".

Shkreli gained worldwide notoriety in 2015 when he jacked up the price of Daraprim, a decades-old drug that is used to treat a life-threatening parasitic infection.

Shkreli insisted it was a joke.

Afterward, he called them "imbeciles".

Shkreli is widely known as the former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals, the company that, in 2015, hiked the price of pyrimethamine (Daraprim) from $13.50 to $750 a pill. She suggested those who were annoyed by it were missing the point.
