Ryan, Johnson speak out against Trump tariffs

Howard TerryMar 11, 2018

President Trump will meet with White House Economic Adviser Gary Cohn and top company executives to discuss the aluminum and steel tariffs later this week. He suggested Australia and "other countries" might also be spared, a shift that could soften the worldwide blow amid threats of retaliation by trading partners.

Trump says he's sticking with his initial plan for import tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum.

The president has said the tariffs are needed to reinforce lagging American steel and aluminum industries and protect national security.

Members of the US Congress's Republican majority are dismayed over Donald Trump's contention new trade tariffs.

"Put simply, the proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports threaten to undermine that success", Hatch wrote. Party leaders have voiced rare public concern about the president's policies.

The people briefed on the plans said all countries affected by the tariffs would be invited to negotiate with the Trump administration to be exempted from the tariffs if they can address the threat their exports pose to USA manufacturers.

Even some of Trump's strongest allies, like conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus, oppose the tariffs but concede there is little Congress will do to try to stop them if Trump moves forward with them.

Congress will begin working on legislation in a week and a half and pass the bills into the summer, Ryan said.

One of those bills is by Sen. The proposal has no co-sponsors and Republicans have not warmed to the idea of limiting executive powers on trade just yet.

Speaking to employees of Home Depot in Atlanta, Ryan, a Republican, added: "I'm just not a fan of broad-based, across-the-board tariffs because I think you'll have a lot of unintended consequences".

Republicans are exploring ways to blunt the president's authority on an issue where they disagree. "Don't weaken his hand", said Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa., a Trump ally who is running for the Senate in November.

Betras mourned that "national Democrats have the audacity to give the president shit on that, and they think it's going to resonate".

Sarah Sanders further referred that lawmakers should not be in a state of shock after the President's move, as "If they were caught off guard, they simply haven't been listening to what he's been saying and what he's been talking about and how he's promised to make good trade deals", she said.
