Tillerson says plans for North Korea meeting 'in the very early stages'

South Korea will "deploy all possible means" to respond to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, the country's finance minister has said. Washington should look to expand the South Korean-North Korean dialog from a two-party conversation to a legitimate four party engagement: bringing both the USA and China to the table.

"We fully expect that it will".

In terms of the May meeting between Trump and Kim, we should hope that it follows the fundamental dictate of the Hippocratic Oath: "Do no harm".

"They have made some major promises".

"We are continuing to prepare on a number of levels", she told a regular briefing. "They say, Oh, please talk to me, and so we go talk to them".

"I feel they're approaching this matter with caution and they need time to organise their stance".

"It's very early stages".

A Realmeter poll showed Monday that 73 percent of 500 South Koreans surveyed said they welcomed North Korea's change of attitude.

Suh is scheduled to meet with Abe on Tuesday.

Shah offered no commitment that Trump would raise the issue with Kim of releasing three Americans now held by North Korea.

Japan worries that agreeing too readily to summit-level talks could simply give the North more time to advance its nuclear program, repeating past missteps in dealing with Pyongyang.

Kono also said Japan and South Korea agreed to cooperate on solving the abduction issue, referring to the Japanese abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and '80s. "President Trump has said clearly and repeatedly that if China doesn't fix the problem in its own backyard, the US will step in to do what China couldn't get done", Adams wrote.

Visible displays of aggression, like launching missiles over Japan and performing the only nuclear tests of the new millennium, galvanized global support for worldwide pressure on North Korea. Trump said he will meet the North Korean leader by May.

The U.S. and South Korea hold military maneuvers every year.

"We all agreed that we're optimistic about this opportunity but we're determined, we're determined to keep up the campaign of maximum pressure until we see words matched with deeds and a real progress toward denuclearization", McMaster said.

Its continued nuclear and missile provocations and threats against South Korea and the United States also have generated distrust toward the regime, especially among the younger generation.

Chung renewed Moon's invitation for Xi to visit Seoul. A turning point may have been reached when the North sent its athletes to participate in the recent Winter Olympics held in Pyongchang, South Korea.

Despite South Korea's insistence that North Korea is ready to talk seriously about denuclearization, Pyongyang has not yet given any indication that it is ready to do so. "Kim Jong Un declared with pride that now we have finally realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force". He praised Mr Xi for his role in bringing North Korea to the dialogue table. It has continued to warn the United States and Japan against war-mongering but its rhetoric has been tame compared with threats exchanged at the height of tensions previous year.
