Broken wrist ends season for Virginia's De'Andre Hunter

Grant SmithMar 15, 2018

He is expected to make a full recovery but be sidelined for 10 to 12 weeks, the university said.

Hunter, a 6-foot-7 redshirt freshman guard, suffered the left wrist injury during the ACC tournament, according to a news release from U.Va.'s athletic department.

For the third time in five seasons, Virginia has earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament but this year feels a bit different.

Virginia's De'Andre Hunter (12) dunks the ball in front of Louisville's Quentin Snider (4) during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Thursday, March 8, 2018, in NY. He averaged 9.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and shot 48.8 percent from the field this season along with being their best overall athlete.

Last year, forward Isaiah Wilkins, this year's ACC defensive player of the year, missed time with an illness.

Virginia (31-2) will face No. 16 seed Maryland-Baltimore County on Friday night in the tournament's South Region with the victor moving on to face the victor of the 8/9 matchup between Creighton and Kansas State. His scoring high was 23 points in his fourth game, a 73-53 victory over Monmouth on November 19.

The Cavaliers could play sophomore forward Mamadi Diakite, who has produced well late in the season, more minutes.

Hunter scored 9.2 points per game with 1.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds, playing 19.9 minutes per contest.

Hunter was named ACC Co-Rookie of the Week following his 22-point performance at Miami on February 18.
