Cordarrelle Patterson on the move again: Patriots trade for former Tennessee receiver

Grant SmithMar 19, 2018

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport adds the deal is Patterson and a fifth-round pick for the Raiders' sixth-round pick. The Raiders were likely on the verge of cutting Patterson, which would've left them with zero dead money against the cap.

According to reports, the New England Patriots are making yet another off-season trade.

And yet, it's in the return game where Patterson truly makes his mark.

The addition of Patterson to the mix gives the Patriots a versatile offensive weapon that could be a factor as a runner and receiver along with being a viable kickoff returner with five career touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Oakland Raiders continue to shuffle their wide receivers. His 32.4 yards per return led the league, along with his two touchdown returns. But over the course of his career, he has been perhaps the NFL's most unsafe kick returner.

Patterson, 27, was selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Tennessee by the Minnesota Vikings. Bill Belichick is a master of taking players who have struggled in recent years and reinventing them, including Dion Lewis, LeGarrette Blount, and Danny Amendola. He could fill Patterson's spot on Oakland's roster. The Patriots actually traded the 29th overall pick to the Vikings in 2013. But that's not likely. Patterson has one punt return in his career, for 9 yards.

Josh McDaniels will certainly find ways to use him out of the backfield as well; Patterson has averaged 10.3 yards per "rush" on end-arounds, reverses, and similar plays in his career.
