A nationwide yellow warning for ice has also been issued for Monday morning.

"We don't expect anything like the same impact as a result of it, although there will be some snow about".

More than 70 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow airport on Saturday in anticipation of the snow and ice, and Highways England has advised motorists to avoid trans-Pennine roads.

That snow storm was so severe that lying snow is still visible in parts of the country today.

BBC Weather presenter Ben Rich said a more persistent area of snow began to develop over south-eastern areas and the Midlands on Saturday afternoon and is starting to drift further west. "Temperatures barely above freezing, and in the wind it will feel like it's well below freezing", he said.

The Met Office says it now looks unlikely to be as severe as the conditions at the start of the month, but has warned that the snow could cause some disruption.

"Snow will turn heavy in places on Sunday, and may last for much of the day across parts of southwest England".

An upgraded amber warning of snow and ice for Essex and Thurrock is now in place from 4pm on Saturday to 9am on Sunday.

Snow fell across large parts of the United Kingdom last night (Friday) as freeing winds from the east drove icy-cold winds drove the mercury down towards zero. Wind is expected to gust at around 30mph and will make for an intense wind chill.

"It's worth remembering that cold temperatures - indoors and outdoors - can affect health, particularly in young children, older people and those with heart and lung conditions".

"St Patrick's Day will be a cold and windy day that will continue to get colder through the day with scattered showers progressively turning more wintry".

During the cold snap earlier this month, motorists in two parts of the United Kingdom reported getting stuck for 17 or 18 hours as snow and high winds brought treacherous driving conditions. High ground could see locally 10-20cm.

One snow-watcher who contributed to the map said: "Some fat flakes swirling around in Reading - trying very hard to start settling".

The second snow warning for eastern England runs for the whole of Saturday, and says: 'A band of snow will move slowly south through Saturday morning with accumulations of 1-3 cm quite widely.
