MS law bans abortions past 15 weeks gestation

Derzis said after the state legislature passed the bill earlier this month that if the governor signed it - adding: "Phil Bryant has never seen an abortion bill he didn't like" - her clinic would be forced to turn away women who seek abortions after 15 weeks and refer them out of state, where the number of clinics is also dwindling in the face of legal and legislative challenges by a resurgent anti-abortion, religious right movement.

On Monday, he tweeted: "I was proud to sign House Bill 1510 this afternoon". He says the law is created to "make MS the safest place in America for an unborn child".

MS only has one medical facility that performs abortions in the state, Jackson Women's Health, and the clinic has vowed to fight the new law.

Attorneys supporting the clinic argue that the law violates MS women's substantive due process and equal protection rights that are guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Current federal law does not.

Mississippi's governor has signed the nation's tightest abortion restrictions into law.

Name SearchWatch Service' Carlton Reeves heard arguments Tuesday before granting the clinic's immediate request for a temporary restraining order that would block the law during the legal fight.

Name SearchWatch Service' Paul Barnes, a special assistant state attorney general, argued that the law serves Mississippi's "interest in protecting maternal health and the state's interest in protecting unborn life".

In his state of the state address in 2014, Bryant said, "On this unfortunate anniversary of Roe v. Wade, my goal is to end abortion in MS".

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed House Bill 1510 on Monday, immediately banning most abortions after 15 weeks of gestation.

McDuff said the law keeps women "from making their own decisions about whether to bear children".

Shilpa Phadke, vice president of the Women's Initiative at the Center for American Progress, concluded that the law "is a new low when it comes to harming women's access to abortion", and "is out of step with the realities that women face-including the lack of exemptions for rape and incest and the fact that MS has one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the country".

While the bill does include some exemptions in cases where women's life is at risk, it does not take rape or incest victims in regard.
