Professor's sexist remarks incites 'watermelon' protest in Kerala

Ismael LynchMar 21, 2018

It all happened after the Jauhar Munnavir professor at Farook Training College in Kozhikode, shamed Muslim students for not wearing their hijabs properly, saying that they were deliberately exposing their chests "like how we slice a small part of a melon to see if its ripe".

A clip of his speech has gone viral. Her husband too posted the photo.

A few women students supporting the teacher also took out a rally on the campus whipping up tension in the college.

Students of a college in Kerala on Monday staged protests against the remarks made by an assistant professor, who claimed that "girls were dressing in an un-Islamic way", the Times of India reported.

"I am upset with hypersexualisation of breasts by people". Later, Thiruvananthapuram-based Diya Sana posted on Facebook pictures of a topless woman holding watermelons.

"I am a teacher of a college where 80 per cent of the students are girls and of that, the majority are Muslims". These girls are not wearing dress as per the religious tradition.

She further added, "Just because people may find my breasts attractive, doesn't mean they are entitled to violate me or my body". Joining the protest, Rahna Fathima of Kochi, an actress and a model, allowed her open breasted pictures to surface on social media. "Although they wear a hijab, they expose some part of their chest, defeating the very goal of wearing them". A woman's bosom is one of the body parts that attracts a man. However, Facebook has removed the pictures and has blocked the accounts of users posting such pictures in protest.

The outrage against the sexist remarks made by a professor in Kerala's Farook Training College has invited great flak from various quarters.

C A Jawahar, principal of Farook Training College, told the English daily that since the speech was made outside the college three months ago, the college could not take any action.
