Celtics provide update on knee of Kyrie Irving

Grant SmithMar 25, 2018

The wire was originally placed as part of the surgical fix of a fractured patella sustained during the 2015 NBA Finals.

The procedure comes after reports surfaced this week that Irving, who turned 26 on Friday, was seeking a second opinion because of a lack of progress with the ailing knee.

Irving underwent surgery on his left knee Saturday and is expected to return to basketball activities in 3-to-6 weeks. That means there is a chance Irving will miss the first round of the postseason, and potentially more depending on his recovery time. The team said Saturday that Irving's kneecap is fully healed and structurally sound, but the tension wire was irritating his tendon. On March 11, he pulled himself out at halftime in Boston's loss to the Pacers, and hasn't been on the court since.

This is good news for the Celtics with the playoffs less than a month away.

The hope is that Kyrie can return either at the start or at some point during the playoffs.

In his first season with the Celtics, Irving has averaged 24.4 points off a career-high 49 percent shooting over 60 games.

However, having that type of procedure likely would've sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

According to the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach, there is "optimism" that the Celtics' starting floor general "could return either near the start of the playoffs or, on the later end, in a conference semifinals series".
