Why Trump Threatened To Veto A Massive Spending Bill

Howard TerryMar 26, 2018

Days before he signed the $1.3 trillion government spending bill on Friday, President Donald Trump reportedly had a terse reply to White House aides who warned of the potential blowback if he failed to sign the bill.

However, U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) was still in town and encouraged Trump to veto the bill, describing part of it as "grotesque".

"I will never sign another bill like this again", he said.

The Simpsons team has released a brand new video titled "A Tale of Two Trumps", which takes a jab at the 45th president who spends most of the clip wallowing in self-regret.

Trump threatened to do just that in an early-morning tweet, lashing out over Congress's failure to fully fund his border wall or address the fate of immigrants brought to the US illegally as children.

The spending package includes $1.6 billion for Trump's long-promised border wall with Mexico.

Trump's tweet created confusion after Congress gave final approval early Friday to the spending bill, which is needed to avert a federal shutdown.

Additionally, the bill does not include a codification of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration program - a program that protects 700,000 unauthorized immigrants who came to the USA as children from being deported.

SNELL: I have to say this was one of the most confusing mornings I have ever had covering Congress.

"If Trump truly cared about a solution, he would push for a permanent solution and wouldn't have killed all bipartisan proposals", Paul Quinonez, an undocumented resident of Washington state and a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (or DACA), told Al Jazeera in the wake of Trump's veto threat. The government spending bill passed quickly through rounds of voting in the House (256-167) and a subsequent passage from the Senate (65-32). So this is not the first budget; this is not the first time where he can tell us, Well, next time I won't do this. "Everyone knows you're the reason DACA recipients are abandoned". The military spending is a US$66 billion increase over the 2017 level, and the non-defense spending is US$52 billion more than past year. The overall sense among staffers was this - that this really wasn't a real threat, and they expected the president to sign the bill anyway.

January 19: House before a government funding deadline, Schumer and Trump meet for lunch at the White House. "There was never a veto threat issued during the writing process, and so there were a series of decisions made at the staff level related to that bill - and those decisions are what put him in the conundrum that he faced today". Unfortunately, as anyone else apparently does who is around Trump very long, they, too, have become blinded by the muck and slime he brings with him from the swamp bottom. He urged the president to sign the bill. "He says one thing and then he does something completely different".

Trump had until midnight Friday to sign a bill or a government shutdown would ensue.

Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management and Budget at a White House press briefing in Washington on March 22, 2018.

Although Trump aides declared Thursday that he meant to sign the bill, there were signs of his displeasure with various aspects of it.

Asked about the president's tweet, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement: "The tweet stands for itself".
