Bubba Watson wins Match Play title to confirm return to elite level

With his win Sunday in Austin, Bubba Watson picked up his second victory in as many weeks and his second career World Golf Championship.

That put Watson, who won last month at Riviera, in the semifinals for the first time since his Match Play debut in 2011. Thomas didn't make a birdie putt until No. 9, and the only other putt he made was at the end of the match when Watson had 3 feet for birdie to win, 3 and 2.

Americans Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson are set for a heavyweight showdown at the WGC-Dell Match Play after winning their quarter-finals in Texas on Saturday.

Watson flattened fellow American Kevin Kisner 7 and6 in a hopelessly one-sided final, after beating world No 2 Justin Thomas in the semis.

Kisner failed to win a single hole until the 11th, where after finding himself seven-down after 10 thanks to a run of wayward tee shots and dropped shots, he holed a lengthy putt in an attempt to find any momentum in a match that Watson was in complete control of. Watson made his birdie from 3 feet for a 3-and-2 victory.

"And the thing is that after Kiradech and myself were all-square after nine, then birdied four in a row and I thought to myself: "Oh, I might just be playing on Sunday and I may have to cancel my vacation but all's fine as we'll now go Monday". "Let me just focus on what I've got to do".

"I'll just chill out, rest up a little bit, recharge the batteries, get into the gym. I'm going to definitely say that", Watson said.

"It's insane to think about it, " Watson said.

Where Kisner seems to be made in a lab to play match play (Note to U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk, following victories for Kisner this week over match play "ninja" Ian Poulter and Alex Noren you may want to have him fitted for a team uniform now), Watson's relationship with the format is something of a mixed bag.

Noren finished third with a 5&3 over Thomas, moving the Swede to fifth in the Race to Dubai behind leader Shubhanker Sharma.

"I happen to be 39 now but I'm just a kid playing golf and having fun with it".

Bogeys by Kisner at the par-5 third and par-3 fourth staked Watson a 4-up lead and a concession birdie by bogey-bound Kisner followed at five. I'm going to try to keep my head down.

"So for me to stay focused, stay committed to my shots, there's probably about four shots for the whole week that I wasn't committed to".

Next up for Watson was Kisner in what was an all University of Georgia final.

"Neither one of us played great golf today", said the British Open champion. It's unbelievable to think about that. "That was big, and then I was able to make four birdies. that was a nice, strong finish for me".

Though Garnett finished first on the Web.com Tour's regular-season money list past year, he entered the event in the Dominican Republican without a top-15 finish.
