"The speaker is not resigning", said Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong in a Monday statement directly refuting Amodei's comments.

When asked why Ryan would want to leave, Amodei speculated that Ryan probably accomplished everything he wanted since Congress gave the wealthy a major tax cut past year. "That's something that my wife and I always decide in late spring of the election year", Ryan said on CBS' Face the Nation in January.

When Amodei was asked why Ryan would resign now - which would be politically problematic for the GOP already rattled by the slew of Congressional retirements - Amodei suggested it would be because the Wisconsin Republican has achieved his long-sought goals. "You know, [former Speaker] John Boehner said the thing: 'Hey, I checked all of the boxes I thought were important and I'm moving on to whatever else'".

"If I was just guessing, he wanted to do the tax bill".

Ryan has been a major source of fundraising for Republican members of the House and a pillar of the National Republican Congressional Committee's reelection efforts.

Amodei floated that Ryan could run for president in 2020, despite President Trump, who's also a Republican, already announcing his re-election bid.

A Republican member of Congress said House Speaker Paul Ryan will resign soon and be replaced by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, in an interview on Monday with a local Nevada talk show.

"The talk primarily is focused on Steve Scalise who is from Louisiana", he continued.

The current No. 2 Republican in the House, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, is above Scalise on the leadership ladder.
