All The Security Updates to Expect From Apple's New iOS 11.3

A new report from Bloomberg claims that Apple is planning on ditching Intel to work on its own custom made Mac chips as early as 2020.

A United States software firm estimated that Apple's business accounts for about 5 percent of Intel's annual revenue. The initiative, Bloomberg says, is codenamed Kalamata and has been approved by the top executives at Apple.

However, Intel's processors will "almost certainly remain" in Apple's range-topping devices, including the iMac Pro and upcoming Mac Pro, until the tech giant can manufacturer its own chips that are powerful enough for "professional Mac users". In fact, the Intel chips are some of the only major components that are designed by people outside Apple. Well, it's not just Apple but other companies like Microsoft are also implementing something similar but they will most likely stick to just the software aspect. According to Bloomberg, Apple approximately accounts for five percent of Intel's annual revenue.

Apple would certainly benefit from the proposed move, enabling the company to keep on track with its own schedule rather than abiding by another company's roadmap, while Intel would take quite the hit despite being dominant in the market. Apple has switched chips before, in the 90's they went to PowerPC before going to Intel in the mid-2000's. Apple uses Intel chips in their computers since 2005.

Companies like Dell, HP, Lenovo and Asus all use Intel chips in their laptops and desktops.

The decision also comes after years of the quick evolution of ARM-based processors that Apple has built into other products in its portfolio. The company's revenue for the quarter was up 12.7% compared to the same quarter previous year.

Apple past year sold 19 million Mac computers, accounting for about 7% of the overall PC market, Pitzer said.

Although Apple is said to be ditching Intel as its supplier for Mac chips, the firm will reportedly make the chipmaker its sole supplier of cellular modems for its 2018 iPhones, eliminating its reliance on Qualcomm. It was a partnership that shook up the PC industry and saw Apple shift away from chips co-developed by IBM and Motorola. Meanwhile its lower power consumption than OLED or LCD, and its thinner design could help Apple make more lightweight, less bulky glasses, and with smaller batteries while still delivering reasonable usage times.
