'Stranger Things' creators sued for allegedly stealing show's plot

The creators behind the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things" are being sued for allegedly stealing concepts for their show.

It's important to note that both Montauk and Stranger Things follow the release of a book titled The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time, which released in 1992 and tells of secret government experiments conducted at a location in Montauk, Long Island. Kessler's oiginal "Montauk" outline also has a slew of similar things which may be found on "Stranger Things", including a story of a young boy who disappears and a cop with a haunted past trying to find him.

A representative for the Duffer brothers did not immediately return CNN's request for comment.

In April 2015, Netflix announced the Duffer Brothers' series, which would eventually become "Stranger Things", with the title "Montauk".

TMZ reports that "the idea seemed to die right there" and that Kessler was then "shocked" when Stranger Things eventually came out, claiming that the two works share a common plot involving top secret government experiments.

He also said numerous plot elements for his short film - including "psychic weapons, portals to other dimensions, time travel, etc." - were inspired by lore associated with the Montauk Project. Seemingly coming out of nowhere in 2016, the series created by the Duffer Brothers has turned into the crown jewel of the streaming service, as well as a series so successful that its child actors have seen their salaries increase for season 3 by a multiple of 12.

Kessler is seeking an injunction that would force the Duffers to stop using his alleged concepts and to destroy all materials based on those concepts.
