Central American Migrants Stalled In Southern Mexico

Irene MckinneyApr 05, 2018

In 2014, then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he would dispatch as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to the southern border as the country faced an influx of migrant children and families from Central America.

An estimated 1,500 people from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are walking north towards the U.S. border in an annual event that was both a protest over conditions faced by migrants and as a way for migrants to safely reach the border.

It also is unclear if the latest foreign aid threat to Honduras will make other countries less susceptible to US pressures at the U.N. After the Jerusalem vote, Haley suggested Washington would remember those who sided with it.

Trump's tweets implied that the caravan was an escalation in an immigration crisis, saying that Mexico was "doing very little, if not NOTHING" to stop people from passing through its borders and into the USA, and adding a threat of punishment: "They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA".

Steve Verheul noted there was a range of chapters "where we're not that far apart", but on the most important issues, he said there was still significant work ahead.

Trump said later Tuesday the U.S. will use its military to secure the U.S. -Mexico border until his long-promised wall is built.

"The idea was never for this group of people to reach the border".

"Justice does not exist for us", she said. US aid to the country is based on the philosophy that supporting economic development and anti-corruption programs will help produce a safe, more prosperous and democratic nation so people "see their future in Honduras and not elsewhere", as a State Department page on USA aid puts it. "We are going to go in smaller numbers to see who really has the right for asylum". "It is unmanageable", Mujica said. A single municipal police officer kept watch.

"The caravan doesn't irritate me, the caravan makes me very sad that this could happen to the United States", Trump said.

That candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, officially launched his campaign on Sunday, along with others running in Mexico's presidential race. "I left without money, without anything, just the clothes on my back". She said she is also considering seeking asylum in Mexico, but worries she couldn't support her daughters from Mexico.

Elmer Zelaya Gomez, 38, from eastern El Salvador, has been sleeping with his wife and three children aged 7, 13 and 14 on the soccer field under blankets as they wait for temporary transit visas from Mexico to continue to the USA border.

To add insult to injury, Trump falsely tweeted that the migrants headed towards the border would be trying to 'take advantage of DACA'.

Local officials have offered lodging in town squares and empty warehouses or arranged transport for the migrants, participants in a journey organised by the immigrant advocacy group Pueblo Sin Fronteras. "We have been in contact with the U.S. Embassy since March 25 regarding this situation".

But the rest of the migrants at the camp seemed unlikely to move again until Wednesday or Thursday. Mujica, who works with the migrant rights group Pueblo sin Fronteras, the organizer of the march, said participants would not descend en masse on the US border.

Democratic Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico denounced the plan as "another pitiful attempt to distract attention from the unsafe chaos" Trump has created.

This year's event seems to have gotten more notice in the USA, and Trump has sent some angry tweets that raised hackles in Mexico, which in recent years has detained and deported hundreds of thousands of Central American migrants before they could reach the US border.

"That's because Mexico has very strong immigration laws - as we should have". They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA.

Trump, doubling down on his tough stance against illegal immigration, has railed against those making their way from the Guatemala-Mexico border in the past 10 days.

She says details are still being worked out, but National Guard personnel are expected to assist with U.S. Customs and Border Protection's mission.

"Under no circumstance does the government of Mexico promote illegal migration", it said.

Mexico "does not make immigration decisions for the United States or any other nation", the statement said, adding that the respective authorities "will decide whether to authorize or not the entry of those who are part of the caravan".

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Wednesday that DHS and the Pentagon will be working closely with governors in the affected states. "Exploring all options", she wrote. Today, Mexico stops it?

Deportations continued at about the same pace in the first two months of 2018, with 15,835 people returned to central American countries.
