Watson wins Par 3 Contest at Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Tom Watson won the Par-3 Contest, and Jack Nicklaus' grandson, GT, made a hole-in-one on the final hole Wednesday.

Nicklaus finished in a commendable tie for third on four under par, although the six-time Masters champion was upstaged at the ninth when his caddie, grandson Gary, recorded a remarkable hole-in-one to prompt the loudest cheers of the day.

Tom Watson rolled back the years to claim an unlikely victory and become the oldest victor in the history of the Par 3 contest on the eve of the 2018 Masters.

"Since I'm not playing in the tournament, I thought, 'Let's go for it this year, '" Watson said afterward.

U.S. golfer Tony Finau was competing in the annual Par-3 contest ahead of Thursday's Masters.

68-year-old Watson went on to become the oldest-ever victor - beating Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke thanks to six birdies from the nine holes.

The Par 3 contest offers golfers a chance to take it easy on the course before the competition begins, with many players bringing family and loved ones on the course to serve as their caddies.

"I was just trying to hit it on the green, trying to hit a good shot, " the younger Nicklaus said. "For that to happen was just unbelievable".

"You always want the best for your kids and your grandkids and to watch a grandkid come along and knock in a hole-in-one on the biggest venue in the world.... wow". I mean what a day'.

"We talked about three days ago and said '(Gary) do you want to hit the ball on nine?' and he said "sure", said Nicklaus.
