First Luxury Hotel In Orbit Now Taking Room Deposits

Ismael LynchApr 07, 2018

U.S. company Orion Span has announced plans to open a luxury space hotel in 2021, giving guests a feel for zero gravity and, you'd imagine, some pretty spectacular views. The Aurora Station is penciled in for launch in 2021 and the company hopes it will be able to accommodate space-tourists by 2022, if all goes well.

Sounds wonderful, right? But wait, it would cost a whopping Rs 61,74,52,500 ($9.5 million) per person to stay at Aurora Station.

Before taking off, guests are required to complete a three-month training course online and at the company's facility in Houston.

On top of the luxury living space, passengers will also be able to participate and experience aspect of life as an astronaut.

With proprietary technology, Orion Span has developed Aurora Station, the first-ever luxury space hotel - designed for both space travelers and space agencies.

Orion Span founder and CEO Frank Bunger told GeekWire that the venture is now self-funded, with added support from two angel investors whom he declined to name.

Scheduled to welcome its first guests in 2022, Aurora is a planned modular space station, capable of hosting six people at a time.

If everything goes well, the Aurora will grow larger as time goes on: more modules can be added on later to expand its offerings, which are now planned to include station-grown food and (we're not joking) a freaking holodeck.

During their stay on Aurora Station, travelers will enjoy the exhilaration of zero gravity and fly freely throughout Aurora Station, gaze at the northern and southern aurora through the many windows, soar over their hometowns, take part in research experiments such as growing food while in orbit (which they can take home with them as the ultimate souvenir), revel in a virtual reality experience on the holodeck, and stay in touch or live stream with their loved ones back home via high-speed wireless Internet access.

The luxury hotel will orbit the Earth at an altitude of 200 miles, just 50 miles lower than the ISS. The long-term vision of the company is to sell space in new modules, which it is referring to as "space condos". On return to Earth, guests will be treated to a hero's welcome home.

"Aurora Station is incredibly versatile and has multiple uses beyond serving as a hotel", Bunger added.

Axiom Space, a Texas-based company with a former International Space Station manager at the helm, has plans to put a commercial space station in orbit by 2024.

Orion Span isn't alone in seeking to carve out this path.

In fact, there are already plans to add a luxury module to the ISS to carve out a tiny space for tourists, but that seems chintzy now compared to an entire station.
