Trump Will Not Attend 2018 White House Correspondents' Dinner

But shortly afterward, the White House Correspondents' Association, which hosts the annual black-tie affair, put to rest any drama that Trump's "probably not" might have stirred up.

Skipping the dinner is a symbol of the president's deeply strained relationship with the news outlets that cover him. Last year, Trump was the first president to forgo the event since Ronald Reagan in 1981, when the president was recovering from an assassination attempt.

President Trump told "Bernie & Sid in the Morning" on 77-WABC in NY during a phone interview on Friday morning that it's "unlikely" he will "do the White House correspondents' dinner this year", before adding the news media is "so bad and so fake".

US President Donald Trump plans to skip the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, marking the second year he has shunned the glitzy gathering of Washington journalists he routinely assails as "fake news".

The statement from WHCA president Margaret Talev however noted that White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will attend the dinner and sit at the head table in lieu of Trump.

Talev also said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders will represent the administration at the April 28 dinner. "I call them novelists". The entirety of the White House staff also opted to boycott it that year.

When asked for comment on Friday, the White House noted that Mr. Trump had pretaped his radio appearance, rather than calling in live. Just a few hours after the announcement on Friday, the president tweeted about the "Fake News Media" and said, "so much of the media is dishonest and corrupt!"

He rented Capitol Hill accommodation from the wife of an energy lobbyist past year at the below-market rate of US$50 per day and used taxpayer funds for first-class travel.

Mr. Trump's nine-minute appearance on WABC was not exactly an outlier when it comes to high-ranking administration officials making time for local NY programming.

Amid his and his press office's antagonistic relationships with the news media, the president did not attend the annual gala a year ago either.
