GTA 5 is now the most profitable entertainment product ever

In the four and a half years since its September 2013 release, Grand Theft Auto V has gone on to earn US$6 billion (RM23.2 million), says Cowen analyst Doug Creutz, speaking to Marketwatch.

The non-stop money-making machine that is GTA V has near-weekly updates full of new modes, vehicles, and in-game shopping opportunities to thank for its never-ending flow of cash.

'Grand Theft Auto V lets players follow a three-protagonist storyline or cut loose in a fictionalised Los Angeles. At the very least, there are some who purchased the title for the multiplayer alone.

At the moment, GTA developer Rockstar is working on Red Dead Redemption 2 that's out on October 26, 2018. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that a fair amount of the reported $6 billion/90 million came from repeat sales when consumers upgraded to the next console generation.

This happened with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as well; in 2014, the studio took 17 songs out of the game. Think of all the incredible games and movies that have been released over the years, and realize that GTA V is more profitable than any of them.

While Tetris and Minecraft have technically sold more units (170 million and 144 million respectively) than GTA: V, the action-adventure game is undeniably more expensive than the games that sit at number one and two on the list.

"I think it's a wild outlier", said Creutz, adding, "That's not to say Rockstar won't have other big hits-it may-but another GTA 5 isn't likely".

"Michael Jackson had a lot of hit albums but he only had one Thriller".
