Nevada struggles to close gender pay gap, study finds

Eileen GuzmanApr 11, 2018

"I've been doing research on women and negotiation, and one thing that pops up is that especially with younger women who haven't had experience negotiating, they so often don't know what is and isn't negotiable", she told me.

It's the symbolic day that represents the day up to which women have to work in 2018, to make up for the pay their male counterparts earned in 2017.

The gap in gender pay inequity has closed only by 7 cents in the past 20 years, according to analysis by the Washington, D.C. -based American Association of University Women (AAUW).

As part of their commitment to look annually at equality in pay across their U.S. and worldwide offices that includes not only an assessment of current salaries, but also hiring practices and performance management to increase transparency and fairness in compensation.

Myth #1: Women make less money because they prefer flexible jobs that prioritize the needs of their family over work.

"A woman with a graduate degree earns $5,000 less than a man with a bachelor's degree", the report says.

Stepping out of the workforce has lasting implications for a woman's salary and financial health.

"[Negotiation is] a double-edged sword", Harris says. When women chose to have their first child during that 10-year window, their salaries never bounced back.

"We employers have to be part of the solution and part of my efforts are to have conversations with other employers through out the State of MS and help us understand the impact women make in the state of MS", said Jones.

Most states have implemented laws against gender discrimination, and all but three states (Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee) have laws prohibiting employers from discriminating on the basis of gender.

The gender pay gap is defined as the average difference between men's and women's aggregate hourly earnings.

The difference has increased to 70 cents on the dollar in 2018 in District 8, where median annual wage for women is $32,305, while the median annual wage for men is $45,853, according to the study.

In light of recent setbacks in Congress and from the White House, women continue to rally for fair wages and effective legislation that will close the gender pay gap once and for all. We'll see social media posts meant to build awareness about how long it takes a woman's pay to catch up to that of white, non-Hispanic men from the previous year.

Of course, driving speed is irrelevant to performance at most jobs, and risk-taking is a mixed bag, leading to innovation and big bucks in some cases and havoc in others.

The United States does not-yet-use such a travesty of a reporting system, but it does maintain the same illusion that a gender wage gap is, by definition, proof of injustice.

"It's very important for women to have equal pay across the state of MS", said Mayor Beechem.

"We need the Trump administration to help solve this problem rather than exacerbating it", she said, explaining that the initiative had been "identifying and helping root out pay discrimination".
