Simbine, Ahye win 100m gold

Jamaica's Yohan Blake tripped up in his attempt to reassert himself as a sprint king as South Africa's Akani Simbine won a stunning 100m gold at the Commonwealth Games yesterday.

Meanwhile, the man who finished just behind him, Henricho Bruintjies, believes he now has a monkey on his back after his stellar performance.

"I was stumbling all the way and I didn't recover from it", said the 28-year-old. "I just focused on myself". It was a pretty easy race for me to win because I've been feeling good. "I felt lacking in confidence, like silver wasn't good enough but I know I did the best race I could".

"I lost from the start", Blake said.

Instead, having been jokingly told by former training partner Bolt that there would be "problems" if he returned to Jamaica with anything less than the Commonwealth title, he was left with bronze. My coach, Werner Prinsloo, deserves a special mention for all the hard work he has done to ensure that I keep on getting faster. "You know your journey".

"This was my first final and to get onto the podium is just unbelievable for me".

The win for Ahye, a finalist at the 2016 Olympics and the last two world championships, delivered Trinidad and Tobago its first Commonwealth title in the women's 100 and meant a Jamaican hasn't won the title since 2006.

There was more disappointment for sprint powerhouses Jamaica as Christania Williams (11.21) and Gayon Evans (11.22) settled for silver and bronze respectively in the women's 100m.

Simbine said: "I wasn't focused on him (Blake), I was focused on myself and making sure I got out fast and that I got to the 50m as quickly as I could".

But there was delight for Andy Pozzi after the new world indoor 60m hurdles champion qualified fastest for today's 110m hurdles final.

The South Africa flag bearer dictated the race from the front, setting the pace the whole way and finishing in 4 minutes, 5.86 seconds to lead all qualifiers into the final.

Makwala, who was barred from competing in the world championships' 400 final in London a year ago over illness fears, qualified fastest for the final with a time of 45.00 seconds.

After crossing the line, the 31-year-old did two push-ups on the track to show his fitness and grinned at the TV camera.

Michelle-Lee Ahye won her first gold medal at a major worldwide meet, celebrating with an air punch as she crossed the finish line in 11.14 seconds and relegated Jamaicans Christania Williams (11.21) and Gayon Evans (11.22) to silver and bronze. New Zealand's world champion Tomas Walsh threw 21.41 metres to take the shot put gold, going one better than his silver at Glasgow.
