It is 'Back-to-School' for Most Oklahoma Kids

In order to compensate for low wages, some schools districts, such as Pueblo City, voted to switch to a four day school week to appease current and entice new teachers. After years of being undervalued, teachers have swarmed the state Capitol and have pressured their lawmakers to better fund education.

"One clear way to value educators is by funding our schools".

Most of the state's marijuana money goes towards grant programs - for specific projects. In 2016, Colorado ranked 46th in the country for average teachers' salary, according to a report by the National Education Association. A $2.9 billion education budget was signed into law prior to April 2, which was the first day of the statewide walkout.

On Sunday, teachers in the Poudre School District were preparing for a busy Monday.

"You have achieved a historic victory for our students ... the biggest financial victory in history for our students", Alicia Priest, president of the Oklahoma Education Association, told her members as they made a decision to end their nine-day walkout on Thursday.

"We have more and more students coming to us who have trauma, abuse, neglect, or complex histories that impact their ability to learn and responds in ways that we're used to", Smith said.

"We have teachers working second jobs", Dollman said.

These movements were largely inspired by a nine-day statewide teacher walkout in West Virginia that began February 22, resulting in their winning the 5 percent pay increase they wanted.

The event comes two months after Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, opened fire in a hallway in the Parkland, Florida, school, killing 17 students and staff members.

Although the governor promised not to use "shell games" to cover the cost of the raise, teachers' union officials said they remain skeptical because Ducey has not detailed how he will pay for it.

Colorado teachers will strike tomorrow against unfair wages and to protect their retirement benefits, reforms being debated in a state House committee tomorrow. As parents and teachers staged sympathy rallies, public school districts were forced to suspend classes for about 500,000 of the state's 700,00 public school students. Instead, it involved children in discussions and watched movies with them.

"I don't want to have to think about those things when I'm thinking about 23 little kids in my classroom", Lewis said. Bevin said people misunderstood his statement.

The sad state of the education sector doesn't affect the rich.

The success of West Virginia teachers inspired educators in the other states to follow suit.
